Figure 4. A cost distribution map, with the geography of the Mediterranean world maintained but the sites colored by the cost (via all modes) of shipping grain from that site to Rome. All roads lead to Rome, but boats do it much more cheaply. (they made a google maps for ancient rome! how neat is that? also: thank god for modern transportation.)
